Things to Consider When Home Schooling

There are many benefits to home schooling.

There are many benefits to home schooling.

You must know the multiple benefits of homeschooling if you are contemplating this or already doing this. All children learn at different speeds so this way it is possible to have them learn at a pace that suits them and of course there will be more control over what subjects they do learn. Still, there are things you need to be aware of that can be harmful to your child if you decide to do this.

Every child needs someone to talk to and someone to play with, and they find their mates in school. Has it ever occurred to you what opinions the other public school children have about children who are home schooled? They are of the opinion that children are only home schooled when they have severe mental problems or because their parents are out of their mind. Be prepared for your child to be humored or teased as the child is considered to be abnormal. These challenges must be overcome if you want your child to have a positive social life and be able to function amongst their peers when they get to college.

When you decide to home school the child, also take care of his companionship needs and this as important as his academic needs. For the child to have a positive social sphere later, here are some tips that would help you to put him on the right path. The best place to start is your own environment and neighborhood? How many children of the same age as your child live around your home? Do you know their parents? If not, try to get going now. Seek out parents nearby and let them know you have a child that you’d like to set up a play date. Since you are the initiator, it is your responsibility to set the ball rolling, so fix up a party and call a clown to liven things up. You cold start by calling all the kids in the neighborhood with their parents for a party full of kid activities like a ball game, fishing, bowling and more and also be ready to baby sit when called for.

Sporting activities offer the best opportunities where children bond with each other. Since they play together they also spend a lot of time building a bond, and you too get an opportunity to meet other parents. If your child has physical problems or would embarrass himself on a playing field, get them involved in activities like Boy/Girl Scouts or any other local organization for children.

Some parents make the mistake of believing that home schooling their children means they can keep them safe from the outside world but this too is an unhealthy attitude. While it is important to keep them away from dangerous situations, it is also important to let them be exposed to the same influences as other children. Remember your kid is fighting a lone battle with other kids who think that he is from Mars, imagine his predicament in public when he shows his ignorance about what is hot on TV, what other kids are wearing at parties and which bands are making a mark? Without being exposed to mainstream culture, they will have little to talk about with other children and will have a hard time relating to others.
